For 3-4 year olds, we concentrate on movement and expression through singing, dancing and improvisation as well as mask and mime work. Nursery rhymes, fairy tales and stories are the core to these classes as the children already have an understanding of these themes, allowing them the freedom to concentrate on expression rather than too much theoretical learning.
The classes are designed to be fun and engaging. The nursery and reception classes develop skills to build:
- Group dynamics and learn names
- Speech Development
- Trust and confidence building
- Communication and coordination
- Memory and speed of responses
- Response to instruction
- Verbal and listening skills
After a warm up involving music, the main activity would be an improvisation with Faith (always in role!) leading the children on different journeys including:
- Weather World
- Pirate & Princess Island
- Disney World
- Enid Blyton’s The Faraway Tree trilogy
- Maurice Sendak’s Where The Wild Things Are and other stories
- Julia Donaldson’s The Gruffalo and other stories
Using role-play, the children will fire up their imaginations creating plots and characters that are driven by the emotions present underneath the text of a classic children’s story. Favourite themes include:
Where The Wild Things Are
Often referred to as this generation’s version of The Wizard of Oz, Maurice Sendak’s classic & timeless children’s book tells the story of Max – a rather frustrated and undisciplined child, this story allows a child to understand the value of their home and that the grass is not always greener on the other side – with the moral of the story being ‘there’s no place like home.
The Julia Donaldson books:
- The Gruffalo
- The Gruffalo’s Child
- The Stick Man
- A Squash and a Squeeze
- Monkey Puzzle
- The Hare and the Tortoise
- Room on the Broom – a Halloween special!
- The Snail and the Whale
Lastly, the children are asked to share and comment on what they have done during the class, usually still in role, helping develop their verbal skills. Children are natural actors and we want them to discover and surprise others and themselves in a safe, structured, fun, environment!
At home, you will watch your child evolve as their confidence grows and their skills develop.
